24th in September 1905. - the first Croatian-Slavonian joint stock company for the sugar industry was established in Osijek. Construction of the sugar factory began immediately after the company was established at the periphery location in Donji Grad. A large complex of land was provided for free by the city administration.

17th September 1906. - the first production  campaign was started at 17.09 1906 and lasted  79 days. The initial factory processing of sugar beets capacity was 700 t of beet per day. Professional staffs in the factory as well as staff involved in improving the growing of sugar beet plants were from the Czech Republic.

Business results achieved in these early years encouraged shareholders of the Osijek sugar factory to engage in the establishment of new sugar factories in Hungary and Vojvodina which were part of Austro Hungarian monarchy at that time. The First World War contributed to the stagnation of many economic activities, and the operations of the Osijek sugar factory stagnated as well. After the war, the factory entered a new period of development.

The first reconstruction of the sugar factory was carried out in 1925.  Originally installed capacity was increased to 1000 t of  beets per day. The factory was again reconstructed before production campaign in 1930. The processing capacity was increased to 1500 t per day.

The outbreak of the Second World War brought the stagnation in the production of raw materials as well as its processing. The sugar factory was heavily damaged during the war, especially by bombing from the air on 6/14/1944.

After the Second World War the sugar factory in Osijek and other industrial facilities were nationalized. The factory continued to work under the name Sugar factory Osijek.

General reconstruction of the sugar factory in Osijek started  in 1953. Obsolete boilers, centrifuges, pulp dryers were removed. At the same time, new facilities were built:

• new power plant with two boilers (64 t / h steam),

• 5 MW power system,

• new beet pulp dryer,

• new warehouse for dry pulp,

• new centrifuge for crystal,

• reconstruction of diffusion unit,

• gantry crane for unloading sugar beets and coal,

• 4500 tons of sugar storage capacity was added.

The reconstruction enabled processing capacity to amount of 2500 tons of raw sugar beet per day.


1967. The  truck unloading station was constructed and put into operation. The beet storage of  42 000 t capacity was  built as well as conveyor and associated machinery for filling storage. At the same time the station was built for the reception of  trucks with two lines of wet unloading and associated installations - capacity of 3000 t / day. Integral boiler capacity of 2x16/20 t / h was removed. The new three boiler Steamblock systems of 2x12 t / h and 1x15 t / h capacity was built.

1968. The classical extraction equipment (a battery of 16 elements) was replaced by the modern Polish extraction equipment. It had horizontal construction, nominal capacity of 3000 t/24 h and it was licensed by DDS. Two vacuum apparatus were added to existing ones as well as four static decanters. Traditional cleaning was replaced with the Novi Sad type of cleaning. New lime kiln and new station for the preparation of lime milk were built. Old classical beet washer was replaced and beet cutter station was modernized.
DDS extraction was automatized, New full-turbo engine 7.5 MW and new chemical water treatment of water capacity 2x30 t were installed.
Reconstruction of refineries and installation of additional centrifuges for the A, B and C products brought an increase in plant capacity. Reconstruction and modernization in 1968. year increased the capacity of the Osijek sugar  factory to 4500 t of daily beet processing.

1973. The remaining part of the classical extraction (16 pieces)  was replaced with the DDS extraction of same capacity as the first one (3000 t/24h). Further  4 pieces vacuum apparatus were mounted as well as  second lime kiln.

Large reconstruction of the factory started in 1974 wit the aim of achieving a processing capacity of 7500 t of sugar beet per day. Reconstruction was achieved in two stages and brought significant change compared to the existing situation. Access roads to the fields of sugar beets and place for its storage were built. The capacity of unloading devices for the sugar beet was considerably increased. The laboratory for precise determination of the amount of sugar beet (digestion) and the amount of impurities (important parameters in maintaining trust between factory and beet producers,  was built. Modern apparatus for reducing the losses of sugar beet were installed. The capacity of technological process was increased and improvements were made in reducing losses in the sugar.

Energy management was improved by the installation of two steam boilers, the introduction of gas as fuel and by installation of new turbo generator. Due to the significant increase in production it was necessary to build a larger storage for sugar. The new 30 000 tons silos for sugar storage was built.

1975. The new station for thickening and filtration of the first saturation juice were installed. All decanters were thrown out. Juice clarification was modified. During the 1975, new boiler which has capacity 50/64 t / h and uses liquid fuel was put into trial operation. Water preparation unit was installed in the boiler plant.

1976. New beet washing line was installed. It consisted of 2 rotational Bütfering system washers. New thickeners for the second saturation were also installed. The separation line for beet roots and small particles was set up. The refinery line was extended by putting into operation another continuous centrifuge (Bosco 5) for C product. Also Poland continuous centrifuge ACWW-1000 for B product was installed.

1977. Third DDS extraction unit of 2400 t/24h capacity was mounted. New device for dry beet unloading of  5000 t/24 h capacity was put in function. New centrifugal separators for the thick juice filtration were put in function. The capacity of evaporation unit was increased by addition of three units. Also new heat exchangers were built.  In refinery, three new vacuum apparatus are mounted. Two units of continuous centrifuges ACWW-1000 type for product B and 4 Bosco type centrifuges for A product were put in function. Also 8 coolers for C sugars were installed. Crystals drying station of 500t/24h capacity with transportation and new storage was built. The new bagging facility was installed as well as three new scales.

1978. Beet pulp dryer capacity was increased to3440 t/24h by building drying drum for beet pulp.

1979. The production and packaging line for sugar cubes was installed.

1980. Coal-fired boiler of  60/80 t / h capacity and 10 MW turbo-generator were built. New stone separator was put in function.

1982. Capacity of wet unloading was increased by addition of new pump. The thick juice filtration station was built.

1984. Separation unit for beet roots at dry unloading was built.

1991. During The Homeland War in Croatia, Osijek sugar factory was heavily damaged. The factory area was struck by 980 artillery shells. The workers were killed on the job. The beet producing area which surrounds the factory was occupied. In 103 years old history of sugar factory, only in the 1991 there was no campaign. War damage was estimated at 20 million Euros. The sugar packaging facility was completely burnt. The beet growing area remained occupied for the next seven years. During that time (until the peaceful reintegration of occupied area) the sugar production was about 25,000 tons/year, which is about a quarter of today's production.

Patriotic War

2001. The beginning of the new millennium brought new investments, both in sugar beet production and in the technological process. Management invested in following projects:

• Cleaners for sugar beet

• Storage area for receiving sugar beet

• Cost reducing  program  for receiving and storage of sugar beet

• Reduction in usage of lime stones and coke

• Capacity increase of the cleaning station

• Reduction in consumption of thermal energy

• Power efficiency

• Heat energy reduction in the production of dried pulp

• Water cost  reduction

• Improvement in quality of drying, storage and packing of sugar

Sugar Factory Osijek is one of the most advanced refineries in the region.
